Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority Participates in the First African Regulatory Authorities Forum and Affirms Support for Advancing WHO Maturity Level 3 Across the Continent
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), participated in an interactive dialogue session as part of the activities of the First Forum of Heads of African National Regulatory Authorities, held under the auspices of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
During his participation, the Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority emphasized that achieving the World Health Organization’s Maturity Level 3 (ML3) is not merely a regulatory classification, but rather a reflection of the maturity of regulatory institutions, the credibility of their decisions, and their reliance on solid scientific foundations and clear transparency. This, in turn, contributes to strengthening trust among patients, partners, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Dr. El-Ghamrawy pointed out that the real challenge facing many African countries does not lie in a lack of competencies, but rather in isolated efforts and attempts to carry out tasks without sufficient coordination. He explained that the establishment of the African Medicines Agency has laid the foundation for a new regulatory model based on mutual reliance, exchange of expertise, and the reduction of duplication in regulatory procedures.
The Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority also highlighted the promising opportunities available across the African continent in the fields of pharmaceutical manufacturing and health investment, in light of a population exceeding 1.4 billion people and a rapidly growing pharmaceutical market. He stressed that Africa is not only a continent with increasing health needs, but also one that possesses genuine potential to achieve sustainable growth and development in the pharmaceutical sector.
In concluding his remarks, Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy reaffirmed the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment to supporting African countries in their journey toward achieving regulatory maturity and contributing to the establishment of a strong African pharmaceutical regulatory system that enjoys regional trust and global respect.
